Three people, including a gifted teacher and a pair of dedicated volunteers, will be the recipients of this year’s Lieutenant Governor’s NBYO Award.
The awards will be presented during the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra’s season finale at the Richard J. Currie Center on Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m.
Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau will present the award during the concert.
The teacher being honoured is Don Bossé, who has been a vibrant and innovative presence in the fine arts department at Fredericton High School for the past 21 years, where he has introduced generations of students to the joy of making music and has inspired them to use that talent for the betterment of the community.
The volunteers are Robert and Muriel Buckley of Quispamsis, a couple who, as parents and as deeply engaged supporters of the NBYO, have promoted music education and fostered a love of music among young New Brunswickers for the past half-century.
Created in 2006, the NBYO Award recognizes exemplary leadership in the musical development of youth and/or the orchestral community in New Brunswick. It is presented annually to one or more individuals or organizations following a nomination process and recommendation from the NBYO awards committee.

The presentation and concert mark the conclusion of a season that has seen the NBYO perform not only across New Brunswick but also in Ottawa and as far afield as Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
In keeping with the theme of remembrance during the centenary of the First World War, the orchestra’s keynote for the year has been Keeping Faith. The centrepiece of its performances has been a specially commissioned suite by Canadian composer Kevin Lau entitled “A Dream of Dawn.” The work will be featured at the finale concert, accompanied by the screening of a video comprised of images of Canada’s participation in that conflict.
Special guests at the Currie Centre event will include members of the Royal Canadian Legion, other veterans, CFB Gagetown personnel and their families, and representatives of the University of New Brunswick.
Tickets for the concert are available through the Aitken Centre box office and from members of the participating guest ensembles, including the Fredericton High School band, the Leo Hayes High School band and the Fredericton Youth Orchestra, who will be using the occasion as a fundraiser for their music programs.
