A new opportunity is emerging for young musicians in Metro Moncton.

This week, the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra has announced the formation of the Moncton Youth Orchestra as an integral new element in NBYO’s highly successful Sistema NB program.

Patterned after Venezuela’s world-famous children’s orchestra program of the same name, Sistema New Brunswick was launched five years ago, in 2009, to promote the collective practice of music as a way to inspire children and youth to achieve their full potential. Since its initial season at Beaverbrook School, it has expanded to engage some 700 participants ages six to 14 years, in four centres across the province - Moncton, Saint John, Richibucto, and Tobique First Nation.

“What we need now,”said NBYO president Ken MacLeod,“is an intermediate program for young musicians who have grown to the point where they are ready for a new challenge.”

He said the regional youth orchestra concept is designed to provide further opportunity and access for the most advanced musicians in Sistema NB as well as others from the wider community.

“In our first year, we are aiming to involve 60 or more musicians in southeast New Brunswick and a performance schedule of at least four concerts.”

Young musicians in southeast New Brunswick who would like to audition for the Moncton Youth Orchestra are encouraged to contact info@nbyo-ojnb.com or telephone 854-9949.
