Once again this week, we’re reporting on the birth of a new youth orchestra! This week, we focus on the Moncton Youth Orchestra, the latest ensemble to join appear under the umbrella of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, Sistema NB.

The new youth orchestra is positioned as “an intermediate program for young musicians from Sistema NB who have grown to the point where they are ready for a new challenge.” The regional youth orchestra welcomes not only this cohort, but also others from the wider Moncton community.

Speaking about the new group, NBYO/Sistema NB CEO Ken Macleod says, “In our first year, we are aiming to involve 60 or more musicians in southeast New Brunswick and a performance schedule of at least four concerts.”

The new group’s manager is Catherine Gagné, a professional violin teacher and performer. This auditioned group will rehearse 5 hours per week, and charges no participation fee. However, “members will be expected to take private lessons with a specialist in their instrument or be involved in a musical program in their school. Their commitment toward their music teacher or their band conductor must be fulfilled to be part of the MYO.”
